Barbuda's Frangipangi Guesthouse is Comfort and Connection Redefined
A very unique site for conscious and creative travellers
Imagine stepping into a world where the sound of waves gently lapping against the shore is your morning alarm, where the warm sun spills through rustic decor, and where every corner invites you to slow down and savour life. This is the magic of Frangipani, a luxurious glamping haven nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of Barbuda. From the moment I arrived, I felt an immediate sense of belonging, as if I had discovered a hidden sanctuary that perfectly blended comfort with the beauty of nature. It’s more than just a getaway; it’s an experience that deserves a spot on your and your clients’ travel itineraries.
A Unique Escape
Frangipani invites guests to embrace the beauty of nature while enjoying modern comforts. With its thoughtfully designed spaces, this retreat celebrates the island’s character and creates an atmosphere of warmth and creativity that resonates with every visitor.
Stunning Aesthetics: The rustic charm of Frangipani features artful decor and a layout that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape, making it a perfect backdrop for relaxation and inspiration.
Natural Light & Ambiance: Guests can bask in the soft glow of sunrise and sunset, creating a serene atmosphere that encourages reflection and creativity. The peaceful environment sets the stage for a rejuvenating getaway.
Off-the-Grid Experience
This space is truly off the grid, where I was greeted by a sign that reminded me not to panic, there is no Internet. Here, lanterns illuminate the surroundings, creating a magical atmosphere. The water catchment system provides excellent water pressure, and I was pleasantly surprised by the warm water temperature. Surprisingly, I didn’t miss the absence of electricity; instead, I thoroughly enjoyed the evenings, immersed in the tranquillity and beauty of nature. This environment allowed me to reflect, connect, and create.
Thoughtful Design and Community Connection
Frangipani is characterized by its unique design elements that reflect the local culture and environment. From the whale bones adorning the entrance of the outdoor bathroom to the single-bed cabana, to the local artwork dotted throughout the space, every detail is a celebration of Barbuda and design engineering.
Connection to Nature: Walking on the rugged terrain connects guests to the island’s geology include reef and lagoon related rocks, inviting you to slow down and appreciate the natural beauty around you.
Engaging Experiences: Dining at Claire’s Art Café, guests are welcomed by Asha’s mother, who showcases Barbuda’s culinary pride through her delectable creations, she “ cooks for foodies,” and welcomes you to enjoy! These personal touches elevate the experience, making Frangipani more than just a place to stay, for me, my stay was a community experience.
A Retreat for the Soul
Frangipani is a creative sanctuary that nurtures the soul. The accommodations offer cosy king-size beds adorned with pure linen, inviting guests to rest and recharge. The absence of Wi-Fi encourages a digital detox, allowing visitors to truly immerse themselves in the moment and savour the simple pleasures of life.
Imagine wandering the dunes, mesmerized by pristine beaches and abundant marine life. The calm inshore waters provide an inviting space for swimming and exploration, while the sound of waves lapping at the shore creates a peaceful backdrop for relaxation.
Community Engagement
Downstairs, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making it a lovely space for meeting partners and collaborators. I had the pleasure of connecting with inspiring individuals such as Cleo Isaac from Barbuda Go, Devon Warner of the Barbuda Council, and Rishma Mansingh, Senior Fisheries Officer. Their insights and contributions to the future of Barbuda filled me with hope and provided much to think about as we commiserated and celebrated our collective community. Engaging in discussions about local initiatives and the vision for Barbuda truly enhanced my experience. Here’s a glimpse into my camera roll of some of the amazing human beings I had the privilege to work with during my stay in Barbuda. Though my work schedule was busy with Adoptacoastline, I am truly grateful for the time I spent with new friends and colleagues on this very precious island.
You might ask, “Can a Guesthouse and Glamping site be a model for regenerative tourism?
For sure! By implementing sustainable practices, supporting local communities, and prioritizing environmental conservation, such a site can promote a holistic approach to tourism that benefits both visitors and the surrounding ecosystem. This includes using eco-friendly, materials, providing locally sourced food, engaging in community projects, and minimizing waste. When accommodations actively contribute to the regeneration of the environment and community, they set a positive example for responsible tourism practices - whether short-term or residential. For conscious travellers seeking a luxurious escape that emphasizes comfort, connection, and creativity, Frangipani is the perfect choice. Here’s my recap on why this site stands out:
A sense of comfort and belonging that transcends physical space
Opportunities to disconnect from the chaos and reconnect with nature
Warm, welcoming hosts who embody the pride and spirit of the local community
Breathtaking natural surroundings that inspire creativity and rejuvenation
Owners Asha and Afiya Frank are awesome humans, and their whole hearts and vision are wrapped beautifully into Frangipangi.
I’d say, Frangipani is a must-visit for travellers looking to recharge, write, design, or simply rejuvenate their spirit. Perhaps it is a hidden pathway towards the stewardship and wellness you waterkeepers might seek!
As Barbuda evolves, Frangipani offers a unique opportunity to immerse in its beauty and engage with the local community. I feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced this inspiring place, and I encourage you to share it with your clients/community looking for regenerative, luxury travel experiences that make a lasting impact.
Until next time, keep dreaming and exploring!
p.s. pardon the typo’s, although annoying - they keep me humble :)
